Washington was a tremendous experience, and I think it will inform the way I write. June especially (the homicide detective) really gave me a glimpse into the reality of such a life. What a truly fascinating experience, to speak to all those people, especially the old newspaper guy, and ex heroin addict. It's incredible how people can rise above adversity. It's amazing how many doors your success has opened for you, and how it's going to help you write even better. I think it must breed self confidence and make you strife to want to do so much more. I'm green with envy mate, and I can only dream of emulating you. I look forward very much to seeing the programme - it's a pity an hour long programme couldn't be made. By the way IN COLD BLOOD is every bit as good as you say, it's gives a fascinating insight into the Clutter murders, especially by getting into the minds of the killers and their families. I enjoyed finding out how they were finally nailed through sheer luck.

Best Wishes as always
Martinmartinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08589619746898331738noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31456518.post-19704664988319688222009-02-03T20:32:00.000+00:002009-02-03T20:32:00.000+00:00I know Dan Fesperman's books though haven't read a...I know Dan Fesperman's books though haven't read any. I have read Mankell (he is my agent's favourite author), and I like him a lot. I will add the Fesperman book to my TBR pile!
Great to hear from you. Expect more blogs re Washington (if I can find the time!), and we also filmed a video-blog while we were out there and we're going to put that on the site too. That will go up nearer the time of the paperback publication, so probably mid-March.
Speak soon.
Roger.R J Elloryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09438870435444248710noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31456518.post-3118797450985535152009-02-03T17:55:00.000+00:002009-02-03T17:55:00.000+00:00Hi Roger,I've been waiting to hear about your trip...Hi Roger,
I've been waiting to hear about your trip to Washington, and your post didn't disappoint! I do hope that programme will be networked. I can well imagine that you won't forget any of those meetings or experiences. It's a city I would love to visit, so I do envy you the tourist trail!
And it's fascinating too, to hear of people's views of Obama, how the fact that he's "smart" will make a difference. I think it will. I hadn't heard his comment about David Cameron. As ET once said, "ouch"!

Can I mention a book (or several) to add to your "to read" pile (or shelf)? Have you tried any of Henning Mankel's "Wallander" novels? (I thought the recent televised versions starring Kenneth Branagh were superb, they caught the feeling of the novels so well). And also - forgive me if I've mentioned this before - "Lie in the Dark" by Dan Fesperman, set in Sarajevo. A world-weary police officer investigating one murder in a city still under seige from snipers. He's written a follow-up with perhaps the best title I've come across - "The Small Boat of Great Sorrows". I've yet to read that, but I loved the first. Ian Rankin said about it "any closer to the action and I've have demanded a flak jacket" and I know what he meant!Jan Birdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09975628107641748639noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31456518.post-50952787206930468422009-02-03T17:04:00.000+00:002009-02-03T17:04:00.000+00:00I will get to it, I promise! I couldn't remember who was whom and there was a lot of business jargon that I didn't quite understand. I perservered as a promise to a friend and haven't quite looked back since!

Adamadamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14837350975584243810noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31456518.post-43168866838119968442009-02-03T14:31:00.000+00:002009-02-03T14:31:00.000+00:00Yes. I mean he talked about NOTHING else! I started the first one, couldn't get into it at all, and it sits on my to-be-read pile for when I am in the right frame of mind.R J Elloryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09438870435444248710noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31456518.post-61814318799463170612009-02-03T14:19:00.000+00:002009-02-03T14:19:00.000+00:00Hi Roger, I agree with you completely, we do need ...Hi Roger, I agree with you completely, we do need a "character", whether it is marketed well, as Obama clearly has been, or genuinely natural as it yet to be seen.

I have a blog reader which publishes in realtime, yours just happened to appear as I was browsing it - hence me being so quick!

Finally,, may I also recommend the Millenium trilogy to you your "getting around to read" list? A Swedish Author by the name of Stieg Larsson, whom died before these books were published. I believe that they may well be up your street. The first is called The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, although I am sure if I have heard of these you will have too!

Adamadamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14837350975584243810noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31456518.post-52526565767910654402009-02-03T13:53:00.000+00:002009-02-03T13:53:00.000+00:00Rather, good to 'hear' from you, not 'ehar'!!Rather, good to 'hear' from you, not 'ehar'!!R J Elloryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09438870435444248710noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31456518.post-3274932703452153312009-02-03T13:52:00.000+00:002009-02-03T13:52:00.000+00:00Well, I am amazed that you read it so quickly! Ho...Well, I am amazed that you read it so quickly! How did I feel about the Obama election win? Cautiously optimistic. I am of the viewpoint that in order to be the US President you have to both be aware of a lot of non-optimum things, and to some degree you have to either agree with them or ignore them. I also believe that change can be accomplished gradually, and you can often only effect change from within the enemy camp. I also have the idea that 'it doesn't matter who you vote for, the government always wins'!
I remain cautiously optimistic, but as I mentioned in my blog the comment that Alyce made to the effect that at least we now have a smart guy in the White House will make a difference.
What can we learn? Well, I remember reading somewhere that Obama made a comment about David Cameron after he'd met him. 'What a lightweight' was the expression he used. I don't think we have had a world-class leader since Maggie. Love her or hate her, at least she had presence, confidence, guts, and could meet these guys on their level. Blair, Brown, Cameron? Lightweights. Really. What can we learn? Well, we could stop being so fixed and conservative in our view as to who is capable of being the PM. We need a tough, certain, confident, competent guy or girl who can stand on a world stage with the same degree of certainty and presence as people like Kennedy, Obama, Clinton etc. Are we going to get one? Somehow I don't think so.
I remain, as ever, cautiously optimistic...
Good to ehar from you.
Hope all is well with you and yours.
Roger.R J Elloryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09438870435444248710noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31456518.post-61339653081955950812009-02-03T13:35:00.000+00:002009-02-03T13:35:00.000+00:00Hi Roger, a wonderful post which filled me with je...Hi Roger, a wonderful post which filled me with jealousy - as did the trip last year! Maybe next time you can take one of us?

You mention a lot about Obama, and your novels contain a lot of information about American History and American Presidents.

How did you feel about the Obama presidency before hand, did that change whilst you were there? And finally is there anything that the current British government learn from what's happening over there?

Best wishes once again.

Adamadamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14837350975584243810noreply@blogger.com
